Career Exploration/Shadowing Program
Wraparound Experts’ Career Shadowing Program aims to provide students and aspiring professionals with firsthand exposure to special education and mental health fields. Our Program serves as an invaluable resource for individuals exploring potential career paths, providing an opportunity to observe and experience a day in the life of a professional in their field of interest!
Key objectives of Wraparound Experts’ Career Shadowing Program include:
-
- Real-World Exposure: Participants gain insights into daily tasks, work environments, and the skills required in specific roles, helping to bridge the gap between academic learning and practical application. The shadowing experience provides insights into the daily realities of working in these fields.
- Informed Decision-Making: By observing professionals in action, individuals can better assess their fit for a particular career, leading to more informed choices regarding their educational and career paths.
- Networking Opportunities: Shadowing allows participants to build connections with industry professionals, which can lead to mentorship opportunities, internships, or job placements in the future.
- Skill Development: Participants can identify key competencies and soft skills necessary for success in their chosen fields, helping them focus their personal and professional development.
- Enhanced Career Awareness: The program exposes individuals to various roles within an industry, promoting a broader understanding of career options and the pathways to achieve them.
Program Structure:
Students are matched with a professional based on their interest. Students would be able to work with one or more of the following professionals:
-
- School Psychologist, Mental Health Counselor, School Counselor, Behavioral Specialist, Social Worker
- Intervention Specialist/Special Education Teacher
- Speech Language Pathologist
- Occupational Therapist/COTA
Participants will spend a designated period of time observing their mentors in their work environment. There will be opportunities to engage in daily tasks, attend meetings, and observe interactions with others. In some instances, a student may be able to participate in sessions (e.g. classrooms, counseling sessions) if the opportunity arises.
Reflection and Feedback:
- Participants will complete documentation required by their school/university.
- Participants will be asked to complete a Wraparound Experts post-shadowing survey where participants can provide Wraparound Experts with feedback about their experience.
